Got A Clogged Drain?
Drain clogs are one of the most common plumbing problems we see. Having a drain clog is the kind of plumbing problem that can go from being a simple problem to a huge home improvement expense with little warning of when the clog crosses over that threshold. Because clogs cannot be seen usually without special equipment most of our clients start by implementing simple, inexpensive home remedies to unclog a drain. If they are lucky, their home remedy works for a period of time, but in some cases they see little to no improvement. Then, they call a handyman Dan out and he does some jerry-rigging to unclog the drain. Maybe that helps for a little while longer. Eventually, a plumber comes out and gets it taken care of after all this time and money has been spent on the issue. Call a licensed plumber you can trust in the first place to avoid the run around and know whether or not that plumber charges a consultation fee. Skilled work is never free and free work is never skilled. Make sure you get an estimate up-front on what the cost to fix the problem will be once the plumber looks at the issue in person. Once the plumber is finished with their work make sure you have a conversation where the plumber explains clearly - what was causing the drain clog and how they fixed the issue. At I Am Your Plumber we guarantee that we will stick to this process with you and we will provide clear communication with you throughout the full process from the beginning to the end of the project.
Our plumbing experts provide same day service seven days a week to Houston and all of the surrounding areas. There is almost nothing as unsettling as water backing up in your tub or sink due to a clogged drain or a toilet overflowing.
Some of the best ways to prevent a drain clog include:
- Buy a debris catcher for your sinks
- Buy a hair catcher for your shower
- Avoid putting certain items down your garbage disposal
- Perform routine drain maintenance
Debris and hair catchers can be found at most hardware or plumbing supply stores and of course on Amazon. They are inexpensive and are a great preventative tool to have in place for avoiding drain clogs.
When it comes to using your garbage disposal just remember to avoid disposing of starchy foods, seeds, and yes, chicken bones.
Here is a quick checklist of what NOT to dispose of in your garbage disposal:
- Oil, grease, fats
- Potatoes, rice, pasta
- Egg shells
- Bones
- Stingy foods
- Seeds and pits
- Coffee grounds
TOILET CARE:
Do not flush anything other than human waste down your toilet unless it is toilet paper.
Performing at home maintenance on your drains is simple and easy to do - it is just a matter of getting it done! We do not recommend you use that one product that you are thinking of that is sold on the shelf to clean out your clogged drains. That stuff does not help you but they market it to you really well. Drain Oh no…it doesn’t work. You can make your own drain cleanser by pouring a one to one mix of baking soda and vinegar down your drain before you go to bed. Half a cup of each should do the trick. In the morning, pour very hot, but not boiling, water down the drain to flush out the drain. This promotes a good flow through your piping system as long as there are no existing issues in your sewer lines.
